HENKIE BARRON

Internship Field: Ecology

Majors: Earth Systems, Economics

Host: Senatsverwaltung für Stadtentwicklung, Umweltschutz, und Technologie; Abteilungen: 1. Energiepolitik, 2. Informationssysteme.

Location: Berlin

Duration: June-September 1999

Description: My biggest project was creating a map of the climate stations of Berlin. Using a computer program, I plotted the points and registered information about the individual stations. This all culminated in a large map that would be sent to the various centers which controlled the stations. When working with the Energie Abteilung, I mainly edited and helped to write various speeches and internet sites

I think that the internship has shown me a way that I can pursue my goal of having a career that helps to protect the environment.

Comments: Mainly, I think that I learned about the applicability of the subject matter that I learned in classes. I think that it gave me a better perspective for future career choices. I think that the internship has shown me a way that I can pursue my goal of having a career that helps to protect the environment. All of these people knew that their jobs were important for positive change, and I found that to be very refreshing and inspirational.

Socially, I felt the most comfortable in the Energie-Abteilung. In this smaller division, the people had more time to spend and to get to know one another. Through this, I met a supervisor who spent a lot of time with me explaining various aspects of German culture and history. He really enlightened me on problems of German especially things that have emerged since the 'Wende'.

German language: I think that my understanding has greatly improved along with my vocabulary. It was not until I worked with Manfred that my speaking improved. I've gained a lot more confidence, so even if it isn't grammatically correct, I think that I can somewhat get my message across.
