WELCOME

This website is the result of a course on European integration at the Overseas Studies Program of Stanford in Berlin.

The authors of the different contributions are students of the European Union class. They learned not only from literature, but met with diplomats from Slovenia, discussed with European students and finally travelled to Ljubljana to meet with experts from politics, business and academia.

This highlight of the fall term 2003 was generously sponsored by Helen Bing, who made the first common Bing trip of OSP Berlin and Florence possible.

When I was at Stanford in spring 2003, I invited the Slovenian EU expert, Alenka Flander, to give a talk on EU enlargement in the perspective of her country, as a future EU memberstate. Her visit on campus was a great success and we made plans for an excursion to Slovenia as part of my EU course in fall in Berlin. My Italian colleage Leonardo Morlino, who teaches EU classes at Stanford in Florence, liked the idea and decided to join us.

With the help of our local partners in Ljubljana an outstanding program was organized, including Slovenia`s president Milan Kucan, the US and the EU ambassador, academics, senior civil servants and business people.

Although it was an unforgettable experience, such focussed trips are no exception for the EU students of the Berlin program, who in recent years have made excursions to Krakow and Auschwitz, Szczecin and Vienna and even to a conference on EU-Russia relations in Jekaterinburg, East of the Ural mountains. Related with the Pan-OSP “World War II” conference in Berlin, a trip to St. Petersburg is planned for winter 2004, followed by a conference on Globalization in spring.

Berlin is the place to study abroad.

Our special thanks to Helen Bing and Alenka Flander. Without your support this trip would not have been possible.
