PAUL CORTEZA

Internship Field: Architectural Design, City Planning

Major: Architectural Design

Host: Duane Phillips Architektur und Städtebau

Location: Berlin

Duration: June – September 2010

I helped on translating my supervisor’s ideas and drawings into CAD. I also modified designs to fit into smaller scale buildings. I have also worked on proposing and designing floorplans. And lastly, I surveyed and drew a plan of an existing loft space."

Comments: "I learned not only to use a computer program very relevant to my field, I also learned the logistics of the profession, from client to design to city authorities to client to other people involved in building houses.

The work expectation was based on what you can do. Coming in as a complete novice and lack of experience in architecture, I was nervous that I would not be able to do work that was helpful to the office, other than the easy busywork, which was very minimal. Instead, I was continually asked what I would like to experience in the office. In fact, my colleagues are very welcoming in teaching and passing their wisdom.

The firm is also known for its city planning, a field I have learned to enjoy and gained interests in, so one can easily learn many facets and effects of architecture. I really was surprised by the amount of learning I had with this firm in such a short amount of time."
